Another theory (mentioned in, e.g., https://www.reuters.com/world/china/shanghai-lockdown-deepens-after-new-surge-asymptomatic-cases-2022-04-05) is that many of the asymptomatic cases are actually presymptomatic. To check this directly, would want to track finer-grained data showing how many symptomatic cases were previously labeled as asymptomatic cases.
